Wat Tummaprateip was established and legally registered as "Wat New Virginia" in 1983, by the Venerable Wimol Silacjarn as the Founder. The temple has moved a total of 4 times in time from 1983 until the present.
At the end of 1983, the construction of Wat Tummaprateip was first started by Mr. Narong Samueang, who rented a house at Columbia Pike Road, Arlington, VA. The temple had two resident monks: Phra Sri Kunaporn and Phra Maha Pramuan.
In the beginning of 1984, the two monks returned to Thailand. The temple was vacant for some time. Until, His Holiness Phra Wimol Silacjarn, traveled from a temple in Atlanta, GA, to stay at "Wat New Virginia", as the only a monk staying at the temple. Later, the name of the temple was changed to "Wat Tummaprateip". After name changed, there was another monk, Phra Maha Mongkol Premsil, who came to stay at the temple.

In early 1985, Wat Tummaprateip moved to Pickett St, Alexandria, VA. Mr. Prasert Issaranuwatanakul. was the chairman at the time.

In 1989, Wat Tummaprateip moved to 8536 Old Mt. Vernon Rd., Alexandria, VA. Mr. Benja Phongpuek was the Chairman. In 1993, the Chairman was changed to Mr. Amnuay Nonthabut. And in 1995, Phra Wimon Silacharn, the Abbot, returned to Thailand. Phrakru Suchin Kantasilo was appointed to be the Abbot and Dr. Sunthorn Siriyakorn was the chairman.

In 1999, Wat Tummaprateip moved to 36 Farmington Rd, W. Accokeek, MD. Phrakhru Suchin Kantasilo, the Abbot, returned to Thailand in 2003. Phra Maha Sunthorn Srisongkhram was appointed to be the Abbot in 2004.
